Japanese DOGU figure
[Background to the creation]
Dogu have been excavated from various parts of Japan. They were made in the Jomon period 15,000 years ago and are called Jomon pottery. Each of these figurines has a unique and free expression, and they all fascinate me, Akira Wakui. Among them, the Shading Machine Dogū is particularly noteworthy. Among the Jomon clay figurines, its mysterious shape and design have left many archaeologists and artists enigmatic and fascinated, and it still sends a message to us modern people. This clay figurines, which still fascinate me, are a wonderful gift from the Jomon people of 15,000 years ago. I created a new design for the Shading Machine Dogū, and on the back side, I created a two-sided clay figurines with carvings that project modern culture and characters, and I want to send the modern world and Japanese culture to people of the future, so I create these clay figurines.
Because, like many past civilizations, if our civilization is to perish as it is, I think that most of the modern video culture and books printed on paper will surely not be able to be left in the future. That being said, if I were to simply make clay figures using designs from modern culture, I would run into issues such as copyright law, and it would be boring. However, in order to continue as a clay figure artist, I want people to purchase my work, and I would like to use the money from that to cover my next production and activity costs. So instead of simply copying characters from existing culture, I create based on my vague memories, consciously creating things that deviate from the correct designs that everyone is familiar with, and I burn the dangers of information transmission, and the dangers of what we call "history," into the shape of the clay figure as a design. I think that when the Jomon people encountered aliens, they probably relied on their memories to create this sunshade clay figure.
