Katsushika Hokusai [Raging Waves] VR
This VR work was created to coincide with a special feature on Hokusai Katsushika's "Douto-zu," a late-career painting, on TV Tokyo's "New Giants of Beauty" in 2021.
There are two paintings in Douto-zu, one is "Male Wave" and the other is "Female Wave,"
and I attempted to fuse these two works into one in a VR work.
When the VR work begins, you are sucked into the vortex of the waves of "Male Wave,"
but as you go further in, you are enveloped in silent outer space.
As you go further from there, vortexes of waves gradually appear, and as you go through the white waves, you are back in front of the painting of "Male Wave" in front of you again. When you look back, you will see "Female Wave," and you will realize that you have emerged from the vortex of the female wave and are standing in front of the male wave again.
This is the end of the YouTube version that can be viewed as a video, but the VR content made with Unreal Engine is an infinitely looping work that expresses the world of reincarnation, where humans are born from women, end their lives while being tossed around in the whirlpool of life, and return to this world again.
On the "New Giant of Beauty" program, host Yuya Yagira actually experienced the VR content.
